Real Madrid moved ten points ahead of Osasuna at the top of the table after beating them 2-4 tonight.
Then Girona’s inability to get the three points needed to keep the gap between them and Madrid at seven points helped them. The Catalan team lost 1-0 to Getafe. Yellu Santiago scored the goal for Real Madrid.
“Our goal is to qualify for the Champions League,” Girona coach Michel told SPORT after the loss.
Even so, Girona is still in second place, but only by one point. Barcelona is in third place.
But Barcelona will play Atletico Madrid tomorrow in a game that could really go either way right now.
Barcelona will move into second place in the table, eight points behind Madrid, if they win their game against Atleti. They still have nine gameweeks to go.
Madrid’s nine games are the easiest of the top three teams. They only have to play one game against a top-four team left. This means they can keep their lead at the top of the table and win the league by a large margin.
That match is, in fact, El Clasico at the Santiago Bernabeu.
That being said, Carlo Ancelotti’s team can win the title with two games to spare, even if Barcelona and Girona can play Madrid until the end of the season.
They have one more game left in the season, which is against Deportivo Alaves. If they win, they will win La Liga.
That’s if you think the Clasico will end in a tie, which I don’t think will happen.
Should Madrid beat Barcelona in that game, though, they would be 11 points ahead of Barcelona at the top of the table and could win the trophy in week 35 when they play Granada away from home.
Both Barcelona and Girona had a few chances to take advantage of Madrid’s mistakes, but in the end, neither team could match Real Madrid’s history of wins. The end is almost here, and another title will be the reward.
