In Jude Bellingham’s absence, the Brazilian led the way, scoring twice in a convincing 4-2 victory over their La Liga rivals. But as is always the case with Vinicius, drama was never far from the surface, as referee Juan Martinez Munuera punished a petulant conduct late in the first half. The winger was seen arguing with the official, making gestures and smirking at a choice that had been made against him. It should come as no surprise that the response was a yellow card.
Vinicius now has to serve out the remainder of his one-match suspension because that was his fifth booking in La Liga this season. Spain’s and England’s two friendlies against Brazil are scheduled for the upcoming international break, meaning that Madrid’s next league game is not until March 31 at home against Athletic Club. Due to his suspension, Vinicius will not be able to play for Real Madrid until 24 days after receiving a yellow card, during their Champions League quarterfinal first leg against Manchester City.
Interestingly, the Brazilian won’t play another league game for Madrid until their encounter against Mallorca on April 13, which is almost 28 days later, due to a break in La Liga action on April 6-7 for the Copa del Rey final.
It’s interesting to note that in his past four league games—against Valencia, Leipzig, Celta, and now Osasuna—Vinicius has received five yellow cards total. The booking on Saturday was undoubtedly preventable and marred what would have otherwise been a fantastic performance by the 23-year-old. His league total now stands at 12 goals and 5 assists in 20 games after his two goals against Osasuna.
In the near future, Real Madrid will be hoping that he can continue to be match-ready for international football before a lengthy layoff. The friendly match between Brazil and Spain is scheduled for March 26. Brazil’s match versus England is scheduled for next Saturday.
