HISTORY VICTORY: Former Arsenal star Granit Xhaka wins the first league title of his career while Bayer Leverkusen win their first Bundesliga in 120 years

In 2022/23, in his final season at Arsenal, Granit Xhaka transformed his role, won back the fans and came close to lifting the first league title of his career.

Ultimately, Arsenal fell short, setting the record for the most time spent at the top of the table without winning the title in English top-flight history. This summer, he joined Bayer Leverkusen in search of a new challenge: they had never won a Bundesliga league title; Bayern had won the last 11.

With a 5-0 victory over Werder Bremen on Sunday, undefeated Bayer Leverkusen won their first Bundesliga title and ended Bayern Munich’s 11-year monopoly on the competition.

With five games left, Xabi Alonso’s squad, who have gone a league-record 29 games without losing this season to win their first major championship since 1993, leads Bayern by 16 points.

Florian Wirtz scored a hat-trick to help Leverkusen secure the championship at the first possible moment, extending their unbeaten streak this season to an incredible 43 games across all competitions.

They were awarded a penalty in the twenty-fourth minute, and Victor Boniface—who had barely returned from a three-month injury layoff—stepped up to score his first league goal since December and his eleventh of the year.

In a dominant first half, they had opportunities to double their lead, and Amine Adli also found the back of the net for the home team.

After the interval, Werder came out swinging, attempting to ruin the celebration, but Granit Xhaka’s rocket from 25 meters out on the hour set out frenzied celebrations in the fans.

Eight minutes later, replacement Wirtz added more, so they were still not done.

Ahead of June’s home leg of Euro 2024, the Germany international scored another in the 83rd, sending irate spectators briefly onto the field. In the ninetieth, he finished his hat-trick to cap off his team’s outstanding effort and clinch the championship in style.
