Things went wrong for Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal in April 2023. Their dreams of winning the Premier League title were dashed by a string of terrible games.
It looked like the Gunners had learned their lesson this season. A lot of exciting football has happened in 2024, like putting six past Sheffield United and West Ham and five past Burnley.
Some people, like the boss whose team management needs to be criticized, don’t seem to have learned their lesson. Yes, April is back, and a group of players who look worn out and drained are waiting for the count.
Last Sunday’s 2-0 loss to Aston Villa was bad enough, but then Harry Kane’s Bayern beat them 1-0 in Munich in the second game and 3-2 overall.
It’s usually not a big deal to lose to the big teams in the Bundesliga. But Thomas Tuchel’s team hasn’t been great this season; they lost the German championship for the first time in 11 years. They still have a chance to win the Champions League, though.
Arsenal had a lot of hopes for the second half of the season, but it’s all ending in a pretty predictable way: without a title.
Fans have to take a sour pill because they saw many of their favorite artists fail to deliver on the biggest stages. Gabriel Martinelli, who hasn’t been the same player this season, had a hard time making an effect when he was by himself. The same could be said for Bukayo Saka.
The player who didn’t do well for Arsenal against Bayern
This award could have been given to more than one green player on Wednesday night. Kai Havertz started up top as an out ball, but he didn’t get much of a chance to kick the ball after Gabriel Jesus was brought on in the middle of the field.
But Saka, a player we all hold in high respect, had one of the worst games he’s ever had for Arsenal.
So many people love this person that it’s hard to blame them. He has been with Arteta’s team through many tough times since the project began. Even though he still has 18 goals, he is not as strong as he was at the beginning of the season.
The English player was hurt and couldn’t play in the home game against Luton a few weeks ago. He hasn’t looked very fit since then.
Not only has he only scored twice in his last eight games, but he has also only set up one goal since January 20th. It’s very upsetting for a young person who is so creative and full of style.
Bayern is not a weak team when it comes to defense, but Alphonso Davies was suspended and couldn’t play at the Allianz on Wednesday, so Saka had a great chance to control Noussair Mazraoui, a right back who was playing left back.
Did he take charge? The short answer is “no.” The Moroccan didn’t change anything for the 22-year-old, and Arsenal’s number 7 couldn’t finish any of his three dribble tries or four crosses.
GOAL’s Charles Watts gave the Arsenal reporter a 4/10 match grade and said that he was “always on the edges of things.” Not helpful were Saka’s moves near the end of the game. He took a quick free kick and missed the chance to get the ball into the area with seconds to go. The corner kick he got went straight at the man at the near post.
That pretty much sums up the winger’s performance. Saka will be upset that he didn’t make a single important pass or have a shot all night. It was time to stand up and be counted, but their main man didn’t.
Finding a man Arteta can switch Saka with will be important for Arsenal this summer. He looked tired in Germany, which isn’t a surprise since he’s only missed three games this season. The Gunners have to start over.
