Young youngsters at a Manchester United Foundation football project in Stockport had the surprise of their life when two first-team Manchester United players recently joined their practice.
Reds stars Scott McTominay and Angel Gomes surprised members in the Street Reds program at their regular Friday night session at Werneth School.
The athletes worked the kids through a range of drills and activities before they posed for photos and autographs.
“It’s incredible to be here,” United midfielder McTominay remarked. “I remember wanting to play football all the time when I was a little child.” Their smiles show how happy they are, which makes me happy to see, especially the younger ones, while they play football.
Regarding the importance of Manchester United Foundation’s involvement in the community, Scott remarked, “You don’t realize how far the work goes; it’s amazing for the children and something they’ll remember for a long time.”
Teammate Angel Gomes said, “It’s huge to have a session like this for young kids; it keeps them occupied, it’s fun, and it’s important to exercise as well.” It is imperative that a team like Manchester United give back to the community.
“It was really strange seeing Scott and Angel since I’ve seen them on TV, but to see them in person is crazy,” said 12-year-old Street Reds participant Shea.
I’ve been to every Street Reds meeting since the beginning; it’s great because you get to hang out with lots of new people and not have to play outside. My football skills and confidence have increased significantly, which has helped me both physically and mentally.
The 48-week Street Reds program is offered at 11 different locations in Greater Manchester. It is mainly funded by the PL Charitable Fund and is based on Premier League Kicks. The Werneth facility uses funds from Stockport Youth Offending Service in addition to its own resources to harness the power of football and provide young people (8–18) the chance to pursue their passion for playing, teaching, and leading the game.
According to Philippa Harrison, manager of community engagement at the Foundation, “Street Reds is an engagement opportunity for young people to take part in an evening activity, in a safe environment that’s also fun.”
When the players arrived, it was amazing to see how the attendees reacted; their excitement was palpable. The Manchester United players show these kids such kindness by spending time with them and giving them a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
