The sensational Kobbie Mainoo of Manchester United has talked up his friendships with Rasmus Hojlund and Alejandro Garnacho, two other young players.
The 18-year-old is having a fantastic, breakthrough season at Old Trafford and is quickly becoming one of United’s most exciting midfield prospects. In Erik ten Hag’s lineup, Mainoo has slowly established himself alongside summer addition Hojlund and fellow academy graduate Garnacho. A photo of the trio enjoying the 3-0 victory against West Ham earlier this month on the Old Trafford advertising boards perfectly captured their unique bond off the field, and Mainoo hopes the image becomes “iconic.”
Regarding that picture, Maino stated on United’s official website: “Yeah, I kind of understand [the reaction].” With three young players, I think they have promising futures, so maybe this will become an iconic photo and we can do great things for the team.
In response to a question concerning his friendship with the attacking pair, the Englishman said, “Yeah, they’re my boys, man.” We’re constantly together because, well, we’re all young. We converse frequently and about various topics. Garna is someone I’ve known from the Academy for a time. For our Under-18s debuts against City, we came off the bench. We didn’t really know him that well back then because he didn’t speak any English, but the three of us have developed a wonderful friendship, so maybe that will continue in the future.
Despite being out until October due to an ankle ailment, Mainoo has made significant appearances for Ten Hag this season. The youthful midfielder has started all 12 of his league games and has played the whole 90 minutes in both of his FA Cup matches thus far. Aside from his two goals, Mainoo has impressed with his maturity and self-assurance for his age. It has been suggested that England manager Gareth Southgate should select him in March due to his ability to coordinate play and perform under duress.
