As they drew 1-1 with struggling Burnley at Old Trafford, Manchester United were uneven and sloppy again.
After an inconsistent performance against Sheffield United, Man United would have liked to play better against 19th-placed Burnley, who are one position above them in the Premier League.
Burnley nearly took a shock lead in 20 seconds when David Datro Fofana feinted past Casemiro and shot that Andre Onana saved.
United attacked following this close call, appearing to wake up. Alejandro Garnacho sent a well-struck cross over the crossbar with a close-range volley.
Four minutes in, Burnley attacked again, with Wilson Odobert almost scoring but Harry Maguire made a smart challenge. Bruno Fernandes passed to Antony, whose powerful long-range shot Arijanet Muric saved.
After being caught at an awkward position, Antony attempted a pass in the eighth minute when through on goal again. Unfortunately, his teammates did not run.
United looked on fire in the first minutes, with Garnacho passing to Eriksen, whose long shot nearly missed the far post.
15 minutes, Garnacho’s cross was deflected for a corner, keeping United in control. Antony’s long-range shot was saved by Burnley’s keeper after Fernandes’ ineffectual corner.
Fernandes’ attempt hit the upright four minutes later as United began to pass well.
Garnacho appeared to be taken down in the box after dribbling past three players on the quarter-hour mark. Despite objections, the referee rejected his penalty requests.
Odobert curled a fantastic shot toward the far corner, which Onana saved around the post for a corner in an intermittent Burnley attempt. United defended well, with Onana punching the ball out.
34 minutes into the match, Burnley’s Lyle Foster headed a free kick goalward from a few yards away. An acrobatic diving stop from Onana prevented the Clarets from taking a surprise lead.
Foster had a chance eight minutes from halftime, but Onana saved again. The United goalkeeper was in great form, but his defenders had to improve to keep a clean sheet.
Eriksen’s pass to Garnacho went into the side nett. The Argentine squandered another golden scoring opportunity, but the fans roared when it thought a goal was scored.
In two minutes of stoppage time, Casemiro nudged Larsen to give Burnley a box-edge free kick. Luckily, Onana caught the shot at halftime.
Four minutes after the restart, Garnacho danced into the box and cut the ball back to Antony, who had a close-range shot saved. Another through pass from Fernandes found Antony, who was unlucky not to score after Muric made another superb stop.
Fernandes passed a through ball to Garnacho, who selfishly didn’t pass to Antony and Hojlund in the box. The winger’s shot missed the far post, highlighting his terrible performance.
Onana caught a pass that Maguire cut out, and Burnley scored on the counter on the hour. Fernandes took a quick, sneaky free kick after Hojlund was hauled down minutes later and found Eriksen, whose through ball was cut out.
Garnacho received a long ball four minutes later, but Wilson Odobert blocked his shot.
In the final 25 minutes, Scott McTominay replaced Rasmus Hojlund and Amad Diallo replaced Kobbie Mainoo. Early on, Amad received a corner cross and passed to Garnacho, whose shot was saved.
United broke through in the 79th minute as Antony raced to intercept a Burnley ball. Antony beat the keeper after Dara O’Shea pushed him, giving United the late lead. The Brazilian’s attentiveness after a tough season was impressive.
Christian Eriksen was replaced by Sofyan Amrabat two minutes later.
United gave up a penalty in the final five minutes. Zeki Amdouni was smacked in the face by Onana’s long ball punch. Following VAR, the penalty was granted.
Burnley tied with three minutes left in stoppage time after Onana dived wrong.
United appealed for a penalty after Vitinho handled Antony’s ball in six minutes of stoppage time. VAR oddly declined to investigate after the referee refused to give a penalty.
McTominay’s cameo ended when Mason Mount replaced him after a difficult injury.
Odobert dribbled Diogo Dalot and took a low shot that Onana saved with a leg.
Amad’s last-gasp shot deflected to Antony, who saved the follow-up. The match concluded 1-1, with United disappointing again after losing to a mediocre Premier League team destined for relegation.
