When Rasmus Hojlund saw Kobbie Mainoo replaced against Burnley, he was taken aback.
In the 65th minute of the match at Old Trafford, with the scores locked at zero goals, the youthful midfield player was substituted by Erik ten Hag.
The Manchester United supporters, who weren’t happy with the choice to replace the wonderkid, booed that decision.
Hojlund was also substituted out, along with Mainoo; Amad Diallo and Scott McTominay took their places.
The Danish striker was seen making his way around the field to the dugout after Mainoo’s number was displayed in video that was recorded by a spectator in the stands.
Hojlund appeared to be responding to the choice by turning his head and displaying a puzzled expression.
When asked about the choice after the game, Ten Hag remained steadfast, stating, “I am the manager and have to decide what the team needs.”
“Removing extremely young players who are in their first year of the Premier League and are feeling a little worn out was the appropriate move and completely reasonable.
“They [Mainoo and Hojlund] have both had injuries this season and I want to protect them.”
Zeki Amdouni’s late penalty kept the Red Devils from winning all three points, but Man United went on to take the lead through Antony.
Man United will not finish in the top four as a result of this outcome and Aston Villa’s draw with Chelsea later on Saturday.
The 20-time English champions will have to make do with Conference League or the Europa League, since the Premier League is unlikely to receive a bonus spot in the Champions League for finishing fifth.
