Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang broke down in tears when Marseille was eliminated on Thursday night from the Europa League.
The first leg of Marseille’s Europa League semifinal match against Atalanta ended in a 1-1 draw last week, leaving the Serie A team with a 3-0 victory in the return match on Thursday night.
On May 22, Atalanta, who eliminated Liverpool in the quarterfinals, will take on Bayer Leverkusen in the Europa League final.
Leverkusen defeated Roma 4-2 overall, but Xabi Alonso’s team rallied late to earn a draw on Thursday to continue their amazing 49-game unbeaten streak.
Leverkusen has now surpassed Benfica’s record of 48 games unbeaten in all competitions between December 1963 and February 1965 to hold the longest unbeaten streak in European football history.
Aubameyang, on the other hand, has scored 27 goals for Marseille this season across all competitions for the French team.
But at the final whistle on Thursday night, the former captain of Arsenal broke down in tears since Marseille’s loss to Atalanta prevented them from going to the Europa League final.
Aubameyang is expected to finish as the tournament’s top striker this season with 10 goals in the competition, thus his Europa League career will not end without a personal trophy.
“It is incomprehensible to go from a week where we competed with them in aggression and desire, then to have been eaten up in aggression this evening,” Marseille head coach Jean-Louis Gasset remarked following his team’s loss to Atalanta.
They were quite active when they did not have the ball, and we made two or three mistakes during this encounter. We were below in terms of hostility.
We made an effort. We attempted to draw even by bringing in attackers, but we were unable to do so.
“We have to remember what we did.” Though we are let down by our dreams, we must not lose sight of our past actions.
“It is crucial that Marseille participate in the European Cup the following season, and I beg everyone to maintain sacred unity.”
