Days after his poor performance against Crystal Palace, CASEMIRO was pulled from the Brazil squad.
The Manchester United player was not included in Brazil’s Copa America team this summer.
Casemiro, the Brazil captain from the previous season, wasn’t the only star to miss out on manager Dorival Junior’s 23-man roster.
Along with Gabriel Jesus of Arsenal and Richarlison of Spurs, Man United teammate Antony was also left out.
Though the 32-year-old has been a consistent member of the Brazil team for the majority of his career, Casemiro may be the most notable of the four Premier League players to miss out on a spot.
With 75 Selecao appearances, the defensive midfielder was an essential member of the squad for two World Cups and three Copa Americas.
However, the former Real Madrid player’s form has declined recently as he struggles to stay on top of Erik ten Hag’s underachieving United team.
Earlier this week, Casemiro faced a barrage of criticism for his role in the Red Devils’ humiliating 4-0 loss to Palace at Selhurst Park.
Ten Hag started the natural midfielder at center back because to United’s injury crisis.
And even though he tried his hardest, he was unable to adjust to the new role and appeared uncomfortable during the Eagles’ thrashing.
Jamie Carragher, a former hero of Liverpool, criticized Casemiro for his poor performance and even recommended the player should leave elite football and join a less tough league.
After the match, he attacked on Sky Sports, saying, “I said at half-time he’s [Ten Hag] got to bring Casemiro off.”
“I understand that he has young players on the bench, but I really believe that Casemiro, as an accomplished player, should realize today that he should only have three more games remaining at the highest level.
“The [FA] cup final and the next two league games.” And he ought to be considering, “I have to visit Saudi or the MLS.” I mean business.
“He’s ageing, the people around him they need to tell him this has to stop.”
He continued, saying, “He’s been nothing short of amazing. I am a long way from achieving what that man has. Champions Leagues; representing Brazil; representing Real Madrid.
“However, there was a proverb I always remembered as a football player: ‘leave the football before the football leaves you.'” This is something I always thought of when I retired.
“The football has left him at this top level he needs to call it a day at this level of football and move.”
However, not all commentators agreed with Carragher’s harsh assessment of Casemiro, as legendary Arsenal player Ian Wright jumped to defend United’s £70 million acquisition.
“I wanted to mention Casemiro quickly because he’s been one of the main talking points after that game,” he remarked in an interview with Wrighty’s House podcast.
“We saw Jamie Carragher mention him on the show, about how great he’s been over the years and that maybe he should stop now and go to the MLS or Saudi which I thought was really quite disrespectful if I’m being honest.”
