On Sunday night, Manchester United’s midfielder Sofyan Amrabat delivered his greatest performance of the year in the team’s 1-0 Premier League loss to Arsenal.
The Morocco international was expected to challenge Casemiro for starting positions when he joined the Red Devils on loan from Fiorentina last summer.
Manager Erik ten Hag started the 27-year-old out of position at left-back at first, and he has rarely started games for the Red Devils in any competition thereafter.
Amidst the continuous injury issue, Amrabat received a surprising nod against the Gunners. Over 87 minutes, the midfield player demonstrated his worth with a strong all-around performance.
The former Club Brugge player got 84 touches and an excellent completion percentage of 63 out of 71 passes, or 89% accuracy.
He also prevailed in two tackles and four ground duels. He made sure Kobbie Mainoo could play higher up the field for United by occupying the number six spot.
After an incredible World Cup with Morocco, Amrabat came to the club with a great reputation. He also had a big part in Fiorentina’s successful conclusion to the previous season.
But for him, things at United have not gone as expected. The board signed him with an option to buy for an initial €20 million, requiring a substantial financial expenditure of €10 million.
Under Ten Hag, he has only played 1,300 minutes to date. Given that Casemiro is no longer at his peak, some fans could believe he should have been given more playing time.
It appears improbable that United will use their option to acquire him permanently from Fiorentina this summer, with just three games remaining in the season.
Amrabat is still anticipated to get a lot of attention. Juventus is among the top contenders to sign him, while AC Milan is also a strong contender.
