GUNNER’S PATH: Kai Havertz’s transformation fails to deliver results despite Germany reaching the Euro 2024 knockout stages; Kieran Tierney leaves the field in tears after suffering a severe injury

Germany made it to the round of 16 at Euro 2024 with a 2-0 win over Hungary on Wednesday night in Group A. The competition is now in its second day of games in the opening round.

Germans took the lead in the middle of the first half when Ilkay Gundogan kept the ball alive in Hungary’s penalty area. Jamal Musiala scored the goal. On Friday night, Musiala’s easy genius was so bad for Scotland.

The second goal doubled Germany’s lead. It was Gundogan who finished off a beautifully smooth and accurate move that saw Maximilian Mittelstadt pull the ball back from the left and score from eight yards out.

They had chances, but Barnabas Varga’s header went painfully over the bar later on, and Roland Sallai was called offside when he snatched a rebound after Manuel Neuer made a save.

Kai Havertz worked hard for 58 minutes, but he still hasn’t scored his first goal from open play after getting a penalty kick the last time out.

Kai Havertz's shift goes unrewarded despite Germany reaching Euro 2024 knockouts

So far this summer, Havertz has been picked to start at the front of the line over 21-year-old Maximilian Beier and outstanding replacement Niclas Fullkrug. Fullkrug came on as a substitute against Scotland and scored a thunderbolt before coming on here.

From the beginning, the Arsenal attacker’s quick moves were giving Hungary trouble. He should have scored within the first five minutes after hanging on to Joshua Kimmich’s pass, but he shot the rebound straight at Peter Gulacsi instead. After a few minutes, Havertz had another chance, but the goalie turned it away because he was being rough with Willi Orban.

In general, he caused Orban a lot of trouble more than once. Havertz had two early shots and made a lot of people wonder about his off-ball play, but he only got 29 touches (Fotmob says 10 of them were in the box), lost all eight of his ground and air duels, and finished only 14 passes. In the end, his success mostly helped other people.

Germany is the first team to be sure of a spot in the knockout rounds of the 2022 World Cup. They made it through the group stage. That step forward is the very least we can do as hosts, but it is still a big deal because it was done with a lot of game time left.

Things we don’t want to see.

After getting hurt badly, Kieran Tierney cried, hugged his face, and walked sad into the tunnel.

Scotland’s coach Steve Clarke confirmed that Tierney had what he called “a pretty bad injury,” which meant he would not be able to play in the game against Hungary.

Scotland is currently ranked 3rd in Group A. If they cannot earn 3 points in the final match, the journey at Euro 2024 will end for Tierney.

Get well soon, Kieran!
