After finishing third in Group B with a 1-1 result, the City team must now anxiously wait to discover if they advance to the knockout stages.

With just one point from their opening two matches, the World Cup semi-finalists needed to win to ensure their spot in the round of sixteen.

Gianluigi Donnarumma deflected teammate Luka Susic’s ferocious 25-yard effort wide early in the game, denying his country an early lead. Gvardiol and Kovacic both started.

Agony for Gvardiol and Kovacic as Croatia are held at EURO 2024Alessandro Bastoni’s header from close range was saved by Dominik Livakovic, who made an even greater stop to give Italy the point they needed to take second place.

Eight minutes after the half, Croatia had a great chance to take the lead after Davide Frattesi’s handball earned them a penalty. The game had ended in a draw at the half.

Donnarumma stopped Luka Modric’s low spot-kick at full stretch, but it only took the seasoned midfield player less than a minute to make up for his error.

When the ball went free, Modric was the first to seize it and put Croatia ahead. Donnarumma produced another outstanding save to keep Ante Budimir at bay.

Italy attempted to equalise, and Gianluca Scamacca came dangerously close to connecting with a low cross, while Bastoni missed with a header.

With almost the final kick of the match, Mattia Zaccagni curled in a spectacular strike to save the point they needed, but there was to be one last twist.

Now, on Saturday at 17:00 (UK), they will take on Manuel Akanji’s Switzerland. Meanwhile, Croatia will have to wait and see if they advance as one of the top four third-place teams, though their chances don’t appear good with just two points and a -3 goal differential.

After receiving two yellow cards in their first two games, Rodrigo was suspended for Spain’s 1-0 victory over Albania in the other Group B match.

After winning those two matches, Spain was guaranteed a first-place finish. They made ten changes, captaining former City winger Jesus Navas, who at 38 became the oldest player to appear for his nation.

In the thirteenth minute, another former City forward, Ferran Torres, scored the lone goal with a low shot.
