Using the summer to get in shape is another exile from England.

He has therefore told his team that he hopes to return to the City Football Academy a few weeks before manager Pep Guardiola and the other players who aren’t playing for their countries this summer.
Another misfit from the Three Lions Jack Grealish announced on Instagram over the weekend that he plans to work out over his break, and Phillips plans to follow suit.
In his first eighteen months at City, he started just two Premier League games (four more in other competitions, though). The 28-year-old then agreed to a loan transfer to West Ham in an effort to salvage his chances of making it to Euro 2024.
But that also turned out to be a failure, as he only made three league starts, receiving a red card in one of those matches against Nottingham Forest.Due to an injury, the temporary agreement was terminated in early May, and he went back to his original club for treatment. It seems unlikely that he will make an impression at City while Guardiola is still in charge, so another loan seems the most likely course of action.
However, City will be touring the USA prior to the start of the season on July 19, and if an agreement is not reached before then, Phillips will likely travel with the team.
Additionally, the statement made by Three Lions manager Gareth Southgate last week that no one has been able to fill the role that Phillips performs for his nation will have encouraged him. With 31 caps for England, Phillips is aware that consistent play is necessary to regain his place in the international team.
Declan Rice and Trent Alexander-Arnold have joined England’s midfield base in Germany.
Conor Gallagher of Chelsea, however, is anticipated to take over for the last group match against Slovenia.
