Following his command for his teammates to ignore Belgium supporters following their draw with Ukraine, Kevin de Bruyne was jeered by his own fans.
Belgium barely made it to the quarterfinals of the Euro 2024 after a goalless draw with Ukraine on Wednesday.
The European heavyweights were the favourites to win Group E heading into the game, but they were unable to defeat Ukraine and ended up second in the group behind Romania.
Ukraine was eliminated from the competition due to a weak goal difference, while Romania finished ahead of Belgium despite all sides in the group having four points.
When the final whistle blew, Belgian fans in Stuttgart Arena let their displeasure with their team’s performance known by jeering them off the pitch.
In response to the statement on X, ESPN journalist Mark Ogden said, “De Bruyne has just told the players to get off the pitch. attempted to cheer for their own supporters, but the booing was so intense that he told the others to stop.”
Shortly afterward, when De Bruyne of Manchester City was declared the player of the match, the supporters started jeering once more, reacting to their captain’s response to their annoyance.
“KDB name now being booed after getting Player of the Match award,” Ogden wrote in a another post.
Belgium’s path to the championship is made considerably more challenging by finishing second in the group, since they are now drawn alongside France, Germany, Spain, and Portugal in the round of 16.
The Belgium-France match takes place at the Düsseldorf Arena on Monday night at 5 p.m. BST.
In the quarterfinals, the winner of the matchup will probably play Portugal, and in the semifinals, either Germany or Spain.
