According to reports, Nico Williams would rather sign with Barcelona than stay at Athletic Club given his connections to Chelsea and Arsenal.

Williams has had a fantastic Euro 2024 with Spain, and throughout the summer transfer window, he has been strongly linked to a departure from The Lions. Following his 4-1 victory over Georgia on Sunday, he not only scored but also earned an assist. It is said that Arsenal, Chelsea, and several other Premier League clubs are interested in him.

The 21-year-old, who is currently one of the most highly-regarded young players in Europe, made 37 appearances for Athletic during the 2023–2024 season, tallying eight goals and 19 assists. His contract, which has a £49.2 million release clause, has three years left on it. According to reports, the Gunners and the Blues are two teams that have expressed interest.

Sport and MD, however, claim that if he is able to secure a transfer this summer, Barcelona is his first destination. Williams is reportedly drawn to him because of his relationship with his teammates from Spain, Pedri and Lamine Yamal. The article claims that Williams has informed Chelsea of his choice for the Catalan team. He is reportedly going ‘crazy’ about perhaps moving to Barcelona, who took second place in La Liga the previous year.

Barcelona, who are hoping to add another winger to their roster and have also suggested Liverpool’s Luis Diaz, is growing more and more interested in signing Williams. Williams might be acquired without having to give up players like Raphinha, who has been connected to a Premier League comeback.

Williams, however, is rumoured to be pleased and joyful at Athletic, wants not to leave the team in disarray, and is aware of the things the team has done for him and his brother Inaki.
