Ronaldo helped Pepe feel better after France beat Portugal in the final of Euro 2024.

During the 120 minutes that France and Portugal played in the 2024 European Championships semifinals, there were many close calls.

Even though Diogo Costa made three great stops in a row to help Portugal get through the shootout in the previous round, they lost to France.

Because Atletico Madrid forward Joao Felix missed the third penalty, France won the shootout 5-3. It’s now 5-3 after goals from Bradley Barcola and Theo Hernandez of France.

Cristiano Ronaldo, the captain of the Portuguese team, tried to comfort Pepe soon after the game, but Pepe couldn’t hold back tears.

Pepe is 41 years old and has played 143 times for his country. World Cup 2024 will almost certainly be his last international game.

The defender has won two awards with Portugal over the course of 17 years. It was in 2016 and his team beat France 1-0.

For Portugal in the Euro 2024, Pepe started all but one of their games. That was the most starts by an older player in a European Championships game.

Ronaldo, who is captain, told everyone about it after Monday’s win over Slovenia. Euro 2024 will be his last competitive game as well.

It was clear that Ronaldo was upset during the game because he cried after missing a penalty in the first round of extra time that would have almost certainly put Portugal in the quarterfinals.

Portugal won the second penalty shootout, even though Ronaldo missed the first one. They went on to the next round.

For the second time in three games, Ronaldo took the first penalty kick in the shootout against France. But it wasn’t enough to get them to the next round.

There will now be a semi-final match between France and Spain. As of 8 p.m. BST, the game will start at the Allianz Arena in Munich.
