Arsenal’s attempt to clinch a contract to sign Bologna’s centre-back Riccardo Calafiori has generated a lot of discussion. The Gunners wish to finish things by next week so they may focus on other targets, claims Fabrizio Romano.

Mikel Arteta wants a better quality squad even if he has an ambitious team to enable him to realise his goal of overthrowing Manchester City.

Arteta is supposed to introduce fresh faces to Emirates following the Calafiori deal. Still, everything will follow the transfer road map he and director Edu devised.

Arsenal most importantly wants to buy a great winger this summer; they also need a quality defensive midfielder to replace Thomas Partey, a regular goalscoting No. 9.

With current attacking stars like Leandro Trossard, Gabriel Martinelli, Bukayo Saka and even Gabriel Jesus, it seems that the option of adding a winger is not really necessary.

However, if we look at the specific situation, this is an extremely important position that Arsenal needs to upgrade.

Last season, Jesus played quite well, but he was not the type of player who could play consistently throughout the season, due to minor injuries.

Meanwhile, Martinelli was once seen as the perfect solution for the left-sided forward position but has clearly lost form. He was also affected when Arteta changed the way he operated to exploit Kai Havertz in the left-sided No. 8 role earlier in the season.

In addition, the former Ituano talent also sat out a lot of last season due to injury. When he returned, he did not play as expected and had to give up his starting position to Leandro Trossard.

Trossard is not an option that can help Arsenal’s attack stabilize in the long term.

The Belgian striker is probably the most suitable choice at the moment as he can link up well with Kai Havertz to create dangerous combinations. However, Arsenal also need to think of a more long-term solution as Trossard is about to turn 30.

Ideally, they would bring to the Emirates a player who can play well on both wings. This X-factor could either provide a replacement for Trossard, or share the burden with Bukayo Saka if the ”Star Boy” feels overloaded.

It seems that Mikel Arteta is also considering such a solution when he is targeting a series of names that can easily switch wings such as Nico Williams, Pedro Neto or Johan Bakayoko.
