Mayor makes fans protest against Mason Greenwood transfer for Marseille ‘to approach Arsenal’s Eddie Nketiah’

Marseille, a French team, is reportedly following Eddie Nketiah, a star for ARSENAL.

It happens after the team apparently agreed to a contract to sign Mason Greenwood, which led to criticism from the mayor of the city.

The Ligue 1 team and Nketiah, 25, have reportedly begun talking about the potential of Nketiah joining the team, according to Foot Mercato.

In order to make room for new attacking reinforcements, the Gunners reluctantly agreed to trade the Hale End graduate, as SunSport exclusively reported in June.

Nketiah failed to get playing time at the Emirates the previous season, although other Premier League teams, including Fulham, expressed interest in signing him for as much as £30 million.

But now, he might be travelling abroad to work with former Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi.

Nketiah, who finished the previous season with six goals across all competitions, is also reportedly up for a fresh challenge.

A separate deal around £27 million has been reached to sign Greenwood with Manchester United.

The 22-year-old played on loan at Getafe during the previous season, and several elite teams, including Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Valencia, Lazio, Juventus, and Marseille, are interested in signing him this summer.

Man Utd suspended Greenwood in January 2022; nine months later, he was charged with attempted rape, assault, and using coercive and controlling tactics against a woman.

The former England international refuted the allegations, and in February 2023, all criminal proceedings were eventually dismissed.

Fans of the Ligue 1 team, however, have launched a movement called #GreenwoodNotWelcome, pleading with the Marseille leadership to give up or face “irreversible damage”.

Benoit Payan, the mayor of the city, expressed his displeasure at the revelation to RMC, saying, “I do not want my club to be covered in shame.”

“It is not acceptable.”

In response to rumours of a possible relocation, De Zerbi declared he would “defend Greenwood” in public.

“There is not much to say, as Greenwood has not been recruited yet,” he stated. He is a champion athlete who competes on a global scale.

I do not know what transpired, and I am not paying attention to personal life. I think of a player as my child when he signs with the team.

“I will stand up for him in public, even if it means pulling his ear. My athletes resemble my sons.”

Matteo Guendouzi was the last player to be traded between the teams in 2022.

The club has already announced that Ismael Kone, Bamo Meite, and Lilian Brassier will be joining on loan this summer.
