Al-Ittihad of the Saudi Pro League has reportedly agreed to terms with Kevin De Bruyne.
The Belgian midfielder’s current contract with the Etihad is scheduled to expire at the end of the upcoming season, after nearly ten years of service.
According to a February story from Mail Sport, De Bruyne was considered a top target for the Saudi Pro League, which was planning to boost up efforts to sign the Champions League winner this summer.
Al-Ittihad has reportedly done exactly that, with the team reportedly having reached an agreement with De Bruyne over a transfer, according to a report by writer Rudy Galetti.
The two teams are reportedly still negotiating over a transfer fee for the 33-year-old, who moved from Wolfsburg to Manchester in 2015.
De Bruyne will join players like N’Golo Kante and Karim Benzema at the Saudi Pro League team if the move goes through.
Al-Ittihad is led by former Manchester United and France defender Laurent Blanc, and its roster includes N’Golo Kante, Karim Benzema, Fabinho, and Jota, among other well-known players.
However, the Public Investment Fund-owned team was only able to finish sixth in the league, more than 40 points behind the league’s clear champions Al-Hilal, despite making significant summer spending.
In a recent interview with Belgian media, De Bruyne acknowledged that in the later phases of his career, it would be difficult to reject the substantial financial offers for a move to the Middle East.
He told Het Laatste Nieuws, “I have to think about what could happen because I still have one year left on my contract.”
At eight years old, my eldest child has no knowledge of anything but England. How long will I play for City, he also asks? When the time comes, we’ll need to handle it in a particular manner.
“You have to be open to everything at my age.” You’re discussing enormous sums of money at a time when my career might be coming to an end. There are moments when you need to consider it.
“I will be able to earn an incredible amount of money if I play there for two years,” De Bruyne continued. I had to play football for fifteen years before that. I might not even get close to that sum yet.
The next thing you need to consider is what that might imply. However, I haven’t had to consider that as of yet.
Al-Ittihad have recently announced former Man United defender Laurent Blanc as the club’s new head coach.
