To what extent may life undergo transformation throughout a span of 10 years? If you were to ask Martin Ødegaard, he would have a great deal to say.

On the year 2024, on a rainy Thursday afternoon on the suburbs of London, we get together to listen to his narrative. As our conversation commences, I experience a profound feeling of familiarity, as if I had been acquainted with him for an extended period of time. Subsequently, I came to the realisation that, to some extent, I possess this understanding; and indeed, all of us do.

Norway is renowned for its folklore, and nearly a decade ago, in Drammen, a fifteen-year-old embarked on his own narrative, one that would profoundly alter the course of his life. He was the celebrated local champion who became an internationally recognised prodigy, and even he couldn’t anticipate the extraordinary events that would ensue. The global anticipation was mounting: which destination would Martin Ødegaard ultimately choose? Despite receiving multiple calls, it was Real Madrid who made an irresistible offer.

However, things are rarely as straightforward as they seem, aren’t they?

The journey of a prodigious talent can be exceedingly harsh on sometimes; the realm of football frequently overlooks this fact. Relocating from home is already challenging, especially when it involves moving across the continent as a teenager to join the largest club in the world. This comes with the added pressure of being under constant scrutiny from millions of people. It is like being a young and inexperienced football player who is not yet fully prepared to succeed. That was the harsh truth for Martin, and it didn’t take long for many others to dismiss his dreams and give up on him before they even had a chance to develop. Simultaneously, he was composing his personal narrative according to his own conditions.
