With a rather easy 2-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers at home last weekend, Arsenal got off to the best possible start to their Premier League campaign.
Even though Mikel Arteta’s team wasn’t playing at its best, they managed to win all three points thanks to goals from Bukayo Saka in the second half and Kai Havertz’s outstanding header in the first.
Though there are plenty of reasons for optimism as we enter the next ten months, some supporters are still cautious to get too excited because, despite finishing the previous season with five fewer goals than Manchester City, Edu Gaspar and company have not yet added an attacking player to the first team.
The good news is that the Gunners are reportedly aiming to bolster their front line within the next eight days. The most recent player rumoured to be heading to the Emirates may even fight Havertz for a spot in the starting lineup.
News about Arsenal transfers
Arsenal is reportedly getting ready to make a bid for Atalanta star Ademola Lookman, according to a recent Italian report.
According to the source, the North Londoners intend to offer the Serie A team €50 million, or £42 million, in exchange for their extraordinarily gifted forward, along with defender Jakub Kiwior.
The Nigerian singer is reportedly valued by the Bergamo-based company at between €65 million and €70 million, which translates to between £55 million and £59 million.
Lookman would be a fantastic addition and could push Havertz for a spot in the starting lineup after his outstanding season last season, but it is unclear if Atalanta will accept the Gunners’ cash-plus player agreement.
How Havertz and Lookman compare
First of all, Lookman’s versatility as a front-line player—including as a second striker—makes him one of the biggest advantages of signing him this summer.
He may, however, go to the Emirates with the goal of playing at the top of the pitch given that he started 15 games in that role last season and that the Gunners are still seen to need to bolster that position.
Havertz would be one of his main opponents for a spot in the starting lineup if that were to occur, but how do the two compare?
In terms of their pure output from the previous season, the Atalanta man kind of has the advantage. He made 45 appearances, contributing 10 assists and 17 goals, or one goal per 1.66 games on average.
By comparison, the German’s total of 21 goals and 21 assists in 51 appearances translates to an average of one goal per 2.42 games; however, things become somewhat closer when we consider the games in which the two played in the top division.
The former Everton star’s 13 goals and assists in 15 matches adds up to a little higher average of a goal involvement every 1.15 games, whilst the former Chelsea ace’s collection of 15 goals and assists in 18 appearances equals to a goal involvement every 1.2 games on average.
Thus, even while the “unbelievable” Wandsworth-born ace—dubbed such by former Arsenal star Sead Kolasinac—continues to have a marginally higher average than the Gunners’ number 29, it’s insufficient to conclude who would win if they were vying for a spot in Arteta’s squad.
This is advantageous, though, as Lookman would have to fight with players like Havertz to be the team’s starting nine if he were to sign with Arsenal in the near future. This would hopefully push both players to reach their full potential and provide the manager with an extra attacking option when the team is having trouble breaking through a resolute defence.
Therefore, Edu and Co should do what they can to get this transfer sewn up as soon as possible.
