Since joining Arsenal in 2023, David Raya has performed admirably, but Luis de la Fuente hasn’t yet established himself as Spain’s best custodian.
Spanish media responds to David Raya, an Arsenal player,’s performance for Spain in their 4-1 victory against Switzerland.
It makes sense that Spain’s manager feels that Athletic Club’s Unai Simon is a stronger custodian than Arsenal’s, especially after Spain’s spectacular victory at Euro 2024.
The 28-year-old Raya appears to be relegated to a supporting role for the time being, similar to the one Aaron Ramsdale once held behind him in north London.
Simon, however, suffered a serious injury in July and is anticipated to miss four months of play.
During the break, Raya will have the opportunity to participate in Spain’s Nations League matches against Serbia and Switzerland.
Following his impressive performance against Serbia, Raya’s performance in their 4-1 away victory over Granit Xhaka’s team has garnered attention from the Spanish media.

Spanish source Marca evaluated Raya’s play in both halves and awarded him an overall score of eight out of ten.
They wrote, “He was definitely in the air.” It appeared from the video that he may have made it to the free kick that found the goal.
David stopped Vargas’ goal with a spectacular save, one of his signature dives.
Amdouni had gotten by his defender and was on a corner by himself, so there was nothing he could do to stop the goal.
“He was reliable in the air to block or clear everything that came through his area of impact,” Marca continued, describing his performance in the second half.
“Arsenal’s custodian performed admirably.”
La Roja arrives in Switzerland in ten minutes.
Sport then said the same thing, saying that Raya wasn’t responsible for Spain’s first goal and that his quick pass for his country’s third goal was “very clever.”
Then Goal wrote, “He did a great job as Unai Simon’s replacement; he couldn’t do anything with the goal but made great saves and showed a lot of confidence when claiming high balls.”
In the long run, Arsenal still needs to add someone to replace Raya.
Arsenal made a smart move on deadline day when they borrowed Neto from Bournemouth, but Edu and his team have now essentially put off making a long-term choice.
The Brazilian is a good addition to Arsenal’s team, but at 35 years old, he’s not going to suddenly face Raya.
Arsenal was interested in Joan Garcia this summer, and they might be again next year at this time.
But it looks like Arsenal made the right choice by not panicking when Espanyol asked for more money than they were willing to pay late in the window.
Raya is clearly a great goalie, and Mikel Arteta will be happy for him to start all of the club’s games as long as he doesn’t get hurt.
