Due to his red card against Brighton, Declan Rice, an essential midfield player for Arsenal, will already be missing for manager Mikel Arteta.

In what may be yet another crushing blow, the Gunners manager is now concerned about his captain’s fitness.

The 25-year-old Odegaard led the team in Norway’s Nations League Group B3 encounter against Austria.

But he was in severe discomfort after rolling his left ankle just after an hour, following what seemed to be a simple 50-50 struggle for possession.

When replays showed how serious the initially innocuous incident with Christoph Baumgartner had been, Odegaard immediately collapsed, clutching his joint and writhing in pain.

And nervous Norway manager Stale Solbakken admitted it looked “painful” when questioned by the media after full-time.

He said, “It looked painful, in the locker room too.”

He was sitting with the physiotherapists and had no chance to move forward. We know it was an ankle sprain.

And as those of us who have played football know, with any luck, everything could turn out okay if the ligaments aren’t torn.

“But I don’t know if Mikel Arteta will give me a call tonight to give me props.”
