After Belgium’s 2-0 loss to France in their Nations League match on Monday, captain Kevin De Bruyne unleashed a furious tirade against his teammates.
De Bruyne expressed obvious frustration during the Group A2 encounter, as he did again later, telling Belgian VTM television that too many things had gone wrong during the game.
“I am unable to explain what went wrong here. At halftime, I already did that to the squad,” he declared.
It needs to be better in every aspect, but I can’t say that again in the media. If the standard we want to reach is the best, but we’re no longer good enough to get to that level, then you have to give everything. It’s over if you don’t even accomplish that.
“I can accept that we’re not as good as in 2018,” the 33-year-old De Bruyne said of the side that reached the World Cup semi-finals in Russia.
Though other things are inappropriate, I was the first to notice that. I will not reveal what.
However, when questioned throughout the interview, he did bring up one issue. “The back of us has too many people. Staying with six at the back will break the connection. That’s just the way things are. It is about people who fail to complete their tasks, not about transition.
Domenico Tedesco, the coach, said he could relate to De Bruyne’s rage.
“He can react emotionally because he is our captain and has a strong winning mentality.”
Belgium got off to a bright start, but a stronger France team—who had won easily in Paris last week after losing to Italy—quickly overpowered them.
