Mikel Arteta, the manager of Arsenal, talked about how happy Jack Porter’s family were when they heard that the teenager would be playing his first game for the Gunners.
Porter became Arsenal’s youngest player ever when he played goalie in Wednesday night’s 5-1 win over League One Bolton Wanderers in the Carabao Cup.
David Raya, the team’s first-choice custodian, was hurt, and Neto, the team’s backup who just joined this summer, was cup-tied from his play against Bournemouth in a previous round.
Even though he didn’t have much to do on a slow night against Bolton, Arteta had great things to say about the 16-year-old in his talk after the game.
What did Arteta say about the teen? “Well, we told him yesterday, and he was over the moon right away,”
“I believe he told his family, but they weren’t ready for that,” It’s a big step and an important event for them, and I think they were scared.
“But I think he handled it really well. He was very calm in training yesterday and today as well.” His friends also helped him a lot with that. What an adventure and a great way to break a record…
“Jack has been training with us since the off-season, so we were sure he could fill the role.” It’s clear that he plays for the national team. We chose the right person because we saw what he could do.
“There are a few [young players] going to school in the morning,” he said. Some of them will have to be there. It looks like it will be great.
“They were very excited after the game.” They also talked to the players to say thank you. It was a nice time.
All six academy players had an effect on the game, Arteta said. “Yes, a really positive night in every sense, the result, the performance,” he said. Some of our more experienced players also got to play, and they really showed how good they are tonight.
On top of that, as you said, we gave a lot of youth players their chance, and they did great. It’s so rewarding to see the joy on their faces and know how much it means to them. Okay, good night.
This weekend, Arsenal is back in action when Leicester City comes to the Emirates Stadium. In the middle of the week, they have a tasty match against Paris Saint-Germain.
