Rumour has it that Real Madrid and Arsenal are vying for the signature of a highly regarded young talent who has been likened to the legendary Diego Maradona.
Playing in the Argentine Professional Football League for River Plate, Franco Mastantuono has been the centre of attention. In January 2024, he made his club debut after completing their school.
Earlier this year, Mastantuono signed a new deal with Los Millonarios. Because of how highly regarded the 17-year-old is, his contract has the most costly release clause in Argentine football history.
Although Mastantuono’s £37.5 million (€45 million) release clause is a high price for a young player, it ensures that a club can sign him if they so choose.
In his breakthrough 2023–24 season, the youthful attacking midfielder assisted on two goals and scored three goals in 29 games for River Plate despite his youth.
While Real Madrid is believed to be far more advanced in their pursuit of the teenage sensation, Arsenal is still interested in a potential deal for him. According to CaughtOffside, the teenager is eager to play for the Spanish powerhouse, and they have already held preliminary negotiations about a move.
Perhaps ahead of his time, a football fan expressed his desire for Mastantuono to join Arsenal back in May when he said, “I would like Arsenal to be there for Franco Mastantuono.” With all you need for key occasions in the UCL, that is a zone dominator. Able to receive strong touch and continue without any issues,” on X (formerly Twitter).

After developing South American starlets like Vinicius Junior, Rodrygo and most recently Endrick, many understand why his preference could be to move to Real Madrid, although Arsenal look set to fight for his signature until the decision is made.
