Manchester City and Liverpool are competing to sign one of La Liga’s best midfield players.
Manchester City, the reigning Premier League winners, are rumoured to have entered the hunt to sign one of Liverpool’s top midfield targets in January.
In order to replace Spanish international Rodri, who suffered a season-ending injury during his team’s thrilling 2-2 draw with title rivals Arsenal, Pep Guardiola’s team is currently searching for a defensive midfielder.
Many consider Rodri to be one of Manchester City’s most vital players because of his amazing sense of positioning, ball control, and ability to manage the midfield fight.
The Sky Blues have a better win percentage (74.1%) in the Premier League when Rodri is in the lineup than when he is not (61.9%). This means that Rodri averages roughly 2.37 points per game while playing, but he only scores 1.9 when he is not. A key player in Spain’s run to the 2024 European Championship final, Rodri was forced to sit out the second half of the match against England due to an injury he suffered just before halftime.
Martin Zubimendi entered the game from the bench to help Luis de la Fuente’s team deal with the loss of their pivotal midfield player. The midfielder’s performance in the competition and his most recent Real Sociedad season made him a top target for Liverpool in the summer transfer window.
Arne Slot thought Zubimendi would be the ideal replacement for Fabinho, which led to a sensational transfer story in which the Spaniard almost moved to Anfield.
It is even said that Liverpool had an acceptable bid for Zubmiendi before the 25-year-old made the abrupt decision to return to his home club, where he has spent his whole professional career.
Although Zumbiendi has participated in all nine of Real Sociedad’s league and European games this season, Football Insider reports that he is now second-guessing his choice to turn down a transfer to Liverpool and the Premier League.
According to the site, Zubimendi may have reconsidered heading to England, and Manchester City under Pep Guardiola may be able to recruit the midfield player, who supposedly has a £51 million release clause in his contract.
