It must have meant a lot to Dominic Thiem that David Alaba, of all people, presented him with the NIKI Award in the Special Award category on Thursday night. The retiring tennis star thanked the Real Madrid free-kick taker on Instagram.

“A truly unforgettable evening – thank you to everyone who was there yesterday,” Thiem wrote on the social media platform. “Congratulations not only to the athletes of the year but to all the athletes who inspire our future generations to play sport. Because sport is the key to a healthy and fulfilling life.”

“A great role model”

His trophy was presented by Alaba, a three-time Sportsman of the Year. “David, I can’t even put into words how much it meant to me that you were there yesterday. You’re a great role model for all the kids out there and a great friend and person! Thank you for your support,” the 31-year-old said, bowing to the ÖFB captain.

There was a special surprise for Thiem in the form of video messages from his old rivals Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer. “I really didn’t expect the three of you yesterday,” Thiem admitted. “You guys were incredible and I will never forget this moment!”
