At Manchester United, Erik ten Hag is under a lot of scrutiny, and Dutch football legend Marco van Basten has harshly criticized his “bizarre” acquisition of Manuel Ugarte.
The Uruguayan international paid £50 million to join from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer, but his performances have been far from stellar thus far.
With Joshua Zirkzee, Leny Yoro, Matthijs de Ligt, and Noussair Mazraoui following Ugarte in going to Old Trafford, Manchester United signed five players during the summer.
Mazraoui has played well, Zirkzee and De Ligt have both drawn criticism for their lackluster performances in their first few months in the Premier League, while Yoro had an injury during preseason.
However, Ugarte has only played 103 minutes of Premier League football thus far, making it hard to predict how much of an impact he will make with the Red Devils.
Ten Hag still bears the brunt of the criticism, despite the fact that Man Utd’s redesigned recruitment squad, under the direction of sporting director Dan Ashworth, was instrumental in the signings.
In recent days, there has been a lot of conjecture that Ten Hag would be fired. Although Sir Jim Ratcliffe is prepared to fire the Dutchman, he is not in a hurry and will, as is to be expected, wait to relieve him of his responsibilities until he has found the ideal replacement.
Van Basten, a former Dutch international, believes he has seen enough of Ugarte to conclude that Man Utd made a costly error in acquiring him.
Additionally, Ugarte cost £50 million. You may ask yourself, “How can you possibly justify spending so much money on that?” Van Basten stated on Ziggo Sport’s “Rondo” broadcast, “That is truly strange.”
Van Basten said, “No, but I could already see in that match that he’s not even worth a quarter of that amount,” in response to the suggestion that he would be making a snap decision about Ugarte’s tenure with Manchester United.
“It’s true that the best players go to the big clubs, like Real Madrid, Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester City, and Arsenal, and he [Erik ten Hag] always brings in second-rate players.” That group hasn’t improved.
Although he is still an excellent trainer, the purchasing policy and the lads who were later purchased for 700 million dollars don’t seem to be worth it, and they are still ill-prepared.
“There isn’t a single celebrity who leads or organizes it.
“It’s ridiculous that Marcus Rashford, who was a fantastic player a few years ago, is powerless to stop this. For a boy who was a global celebrity years ago, it’s odd.
Sources say Thomas Tuchel might take Ten Hag’s place at Manchester United.
As previously said, Ratcliffe is prepared to fire Ten Hag if Manchester United can find a worthy replacement, but he is not in a huge hurry to do so.
Thomas Tuchel is Manchester United’s top pick to be their next manager, and they intend to speak with him shortly, as we exclusively disclosed on Tuesday.
After leaving Bayern Munich, Tuchel wanted to take a sabbatical from football, thus he declined the chance to become manager of the Red Devils, despite having conversations with their management during the summer.
Negotiations will be difficult, though, because the former manager of Bayern and Chelsea wants assurances that he will be allowed to make some significant additions in January and the summer of next year.
