Cristiano Ronaldo led the attack but played ineffectively, causing Portugal to draw 0-0 with Scotland, while Spain won 3-0 against Serbia in the early morning of October 16.
In the fourth match of the UEFA Nations League 2024-2025, Portugal dominated Hampden Park (Scotland) when they held the ball for 70% of the match and fired 14 shots. However, the accuracy in finishing is something that coach Roberto Martinez and his team have not achieved.
The tight defense of the home team prevented Ronaldo and his teammates from approaching the goal of goalkeeper Craig Gordon on the Scottish side. The only bright spot in the first half was CR7’s trademark “bicycle kick” in the 31st minute, but the ball missed the goal by a hair.
Ronaldo missed a great chance to score in the 48th minute after Diogo Jota’s cross from the left put him unmarked, but striker Al Nassr’s header went over the bar in regret.
Portugal almost paid the price in Scotland’s attack in the 77th minute, Anthony Ralston dribbled the ball at speed down the right flank and then crossed the goal, Scott McTominay failed to make the right cut and let the opportunity slip away.
With a 0-0 draw, coach Martinez’s team dropped their first points in the 2024-2025 UEFA Nations League group stage. However, Portugal still topped Group 1 League A with 10 points and had one foot in the quarter-finals.
Meanwhile, Euro 2024 champions Spain secured a place in the Nations League quarter-finals thanks to a 3-0 home win over Serbia. Despite missing several key players, Luis De La Fuente’s side still dominated their opponents with 30 shots on goal.
Defender Laporte put Spain ahead with a close-range header in the fifth minute. Captain Alvaro Morata then missed a penalty in the 54th minute, but made up for his mistake with a goal from inside the box in the 65th minute.
Serbia centre-back Strahinja Pavlovic was shown a straight red card for a foul on Mikel Oyarzabal on the edge of the box in the 76th minute. Alex Baena fired a stunning free-kick into the top corner to seal an easy win for Spain.
De La Fuente’s side have secured at least second place as they top Group 4 of League A with 10 points. Spain have two more group stage games against Denmark on 16 November and Switzerland on 19 November.
