‘LIKE KLOPP!’ – Pep Guardiola says Manchester City resembled Liverpool with controversial late winner vs Wolves in cheeky dig at former rival

In the 95th minute, Pep Guardiola made a playful jab at his old rival, Jurgen Klopp, following Manchester City’s dramatic comeback.

WHAT HAPPENED?

John Stones’ strike in the 95th minute was all that the champions needed to secure a spirited 2-1 victory over Wolves at Molineux. The bottom-dwelling team in the Premier League gave City a real scare, and Stones’ goal against Bernardo Silva was controversially first given an offside call before being given credit following a VAR review. Although the City manager was happy with the goal, he was keen to emphasize that, in contrast to Klopp’s legendary Liverpool team, his team does not typically need to rely on late performances.

WHAT GUARDIOLA SAID

“We are not used to winning games at the end, like Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool it happened many times,” Guardiola said to the BBC. We enjoy the flavor a lot.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Because of the three title races they contested, Guardiola and Klopp’s teams had a ferocious rivalry on the field, but they also always had a lighthearted connection and the utmost respect for one another.

Guardiola thought City deserved to win the match hands down. “It is literally so difficult with 11 [Wolves] players in the penalty spot,” he continued. The teams have chosen to play that manner [against us] because that is how we have played for many years. However, we exercised patience. They are quite strong, they had some transitions, and they had physicality in the middle and pace up front. However, we exercised patience. Even yet, it’s wonderful that we are who we are.”

WHAT NEXT FOR MAN CITY?

With their 31st straight Premier League victory, Guardiola’s team broke a club record. Their most recent loss was against Aston Villa in December 2023. After that, they’ll host Sparta Prague in the Champions League on Wednesday. Their next league match is against Southampton, who are currently in second place, at home on Saturday.
