Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa, the deputy speaker of parliament for Uganda, and his son Timothy Tayebwa met with Manchester United goalkeeper Andrey Onana on Sunday morning. Onana is in Uganda for Cameroon’s AFCON qualification match against Kenya on Monday.
Just before Cameroon’s pivotal Group J match, the West African national team is camped at the Sheraton Hotel in Kampala, where Tayebwa and Onana met.
During the meeting, Tayebwa highlighted Uganda’s ardent Manchester United supporters, urging Onana to push for the legendary football team to pay them a visit.
“My son and I had a fascinating conversation with @AndreyOnana this morning. On Sunday morning, Hon. Tayebwa wrote, “The @ManUtd goalkeeper is in Uganda for their @DiskiAfrika qualifier match against @Harambee__Stars of Kenya.”
As passionate supporters of Manchester United, we are thrilled to see an African representing our continent at the world’s top football team. We’re praying for his success, and I’m happy with how he’s adapted,” he continued.
On a more humorous note, I told him that because the Bakiga came from Cameroon, I would do some research to find out whether he had any cousins in Uganda. He has invited my son and me to see him live at Old Trafford, and I am just as thrilled about it.
The Indomitable Lions of Cameroon arrived in Uganda on Saturday in preparation for Monday’s matchup with the Harambee Stars at Mandela Stadium.
After a game against Zimbabwe last month that drew thousands of spectators, this journey to Kampala is their second trip to Uganda in recent months.
However, the Kenya Football Federation announced that the upcoming AFCON qualifiers will be held behind closed doors, reducing the opportunity for fans to witness Onana and the Indomitable Lions play live at Namboole.
The fact that many Ugandan Manchester United supporters who chanted for Cameroon during their previous match would now have to do it from outside the stadium is a letdown for the devoted fan base eager to support their idol.
