There is much conjecture that Ruben Amorim, the coach of Sporting Lisbon, will succeed Erik Ten Hag at Manchester United, but when might he do so?
Ruben Amorim, the coach of Sporting Lisbon, is being cautious, but it appears that he will eventually take over as manager of Manchester United.
Following Sporting’s 3-1 victory over Nacional in the quarterfinals of the Portuguese League Cup, the Portuguese were naturally inundated with questions from reporters.
He stated on Tuesday night that his future “hasn’t been decided yet” in spite of rumors that he had verbally consented to a transfer to Old Trafford.
“Nobody knows if this was my farewell match, or if there will be a farewell match,” Amorim stated.
“I will be here” is Amorim’s response when asked if he will be in the dugout at Old Trafford for Sunday’s match against Chelsea. However, four extremely telling words were said.
He chuckled when questioned and responded, “I can’t promise anything.”
“I don’t know,” he continued. I do know that tomorrow I’ll be in training to get ready for the match versus Estrela da Amadora.
A few hours prior, Sporting informed the Lisbon Stock Exchange that it had informed United that Amorim’s contract included a release clause worth 10 million euros ($10.8 million).
United “has shown interest” in paying that much for Amorim, according to the Portuguese champions.
United, currently in 14th place in the Premier League, is trying to find a replacement for Erik ten Hag, who was fired on Monday.
Since Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013, Ten Hag has served as the 20-time English champions’ fifth permanent manager. Since Ferguson’s departure, United has failed to win the league.
Amorim, 39, has been Sporting’s coach since 2020 and guided the team to league titles in Portugal in 2021 and the previous year.
Sporting has won all nine of its games this season, putting them at the top of the league and solidifying Amorim’s standing as one of Europe’s most gifted coaches.
“I need to explain everything, but we’ll have to wait a little while longer. “It will be extremely evident,” he stated.
Casemiro has undoubtedly faced a lot of criticism this season. Whispers have emerged suggesting that the Brazilian might be enticed by the Saudi Pro League come summer, citing his difficulty in keeping pace with the Premier League’s intense speed. The former Real Madrid player was replaced by newcomer Manuel Ugarte after a lackluster showing against Liverpool, where he contributed to giving up two goals in the crushing 3-0 loss.
Antony, previously a standout player for Ten Hag at Ajax, despite the faith shown through his hefty £86m transfer fee, failed to make an impactful start at his new club, further blemishing Ten Hag’s record of transfers. Many believe that the staggering near-£600m splurge to craft Ten Hag’s dream team may have been for naught.
Bruno Fernandes, another high-profile player who was appointed captain by Ten Hag, has also recently been the target of criticism due to below-average play and a duo of red cards, albeit one overturned in games against Tottenham and Porto.
But Fernandes used social media to thank Ten Hag after he was fired: “Thanks for everything, boss. I value our time together and the trust we have in one another. I wish you all the best in the future.”
He also appealed to the fans, saying: “Even knowing the last period hasn’t been great from all of us, I hope you fans can keep with you the good things the manager has done for our club.”
