Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al Nassr team was eliminated from the King’s Cup after he missed an injury-time penalty.
Al Taawoun defeated the host team 1-0 on Tuesday night, eliminating Al Nassr from the game in the round of 16.
Ronaldo’s missed penalty in the 96th minute guaranteed Saudi Al Nassr’s shocking elimination from the Cup.
Ronaldo, 39, lost against Al Taawoun on the road for the third time in his King’s Cup career.
Deep during stoppage time, Ronaldo blew a great opportunity to draw the score and send the match into extra time.
But the former Manchester United star’s penalty struck the bar.
The 39-year-old walked out of the away team’s penalty area with his head in his hands.
Al Taawoun startled the home crowd and took the lead in the 71st minute when defender Waleed Al-Ahmed nodded home from a corner.
When Waleed took down Mohammed Maran inside the penalty box to give away a penalty, it was a sudden change from hero to villain. The visiting team came very close to scoring again in injury time.
Thankfully, Ronaldo’s missed penalty converted fear into relief, ensuring the Portuguese player’s third straight King’s Cup departure since joining Al Nassr in 2022.
When the Saudi Pro League begins on Friday and Al Nassr plays league leaders Al Hilal, Ronaldo will be hoping to return to his typical self.
