A BETTER POSITION: The outstanding performance of prodigy Nico O’Reilly has earned high praise from Pep Guardiola

There were some encouraging aspects of last night’s game for the champions, even if Manchester City lost 2-1 to Tottenham and had new injury concerns for a number of players, eliminating them from the Carabao Cup. The team led by Pep Guardiola challenged the hosts and was unfortunate not to force an equalizer in the closing minutes. During the game last night, all of City’s academy boys demonstrated their abilities. However, one in particular demonstrated that he is not out of place at the top. Throughout the world champs’ match last night, Nico O’Reilly made an impression.

Nico O’Reilly had a tense start to the game last night. It did seem early on that the young Manchester City midfielder might have been affected by the situation. However, he became more comfortable with the game as it went on. During City’s preseason tour of the United States, O’Reilly shown his poise and technical skill. O’Reilly’s performance was all the more remarkable because he did this against a top-tier Tottenham team. O’Reilly stood tall when his team needed him to as injuries struck the champions. The youthful midfield player deserves praise for that. O’Reilly nearly put a late equalizer on top of his night, but a brilliant goal-line clearance took away his opportunity.

After Manchester City’s loss, Pep Guardiola was gushing about his young players’ efforts. Jahmai Simpson-Pusey, Jacob Wright, and James McAtee all displayed glimpses of their best play against Tottenham last night. He is very pleased with Nico O’Reilly’s performances. Guardiola remarked after the game on City’s youth: “What a game he played. The Nico we saw tonight was the Nico we met last season.” This competition is excellent for providing players with this opportunity. In his playing time, Jahmai was outstanding at center-half. Nico and Jacob performed pretty well, while James McAtee had a great game. I am quite happy with what I have observed. 90 minutes of calm play against a very threatening squad.

Nico O’Reilly looked like a Manchester City player against Tottenham, which is the highest praise you can offer him for his performance last night. The ability of such a young talent to flourish in such a harsh setting is evidence of O’Reilly’s abilities. Although he was far from flawless, he demonstrated last night that he belongs. Given his performance last night, O’Reilly is prepared to step up when needed, but he will be needed over the course of the next week as City deals with an injury issue.
