Erling Haaland humiliated by hat-trick hero Viktor Gyokeres as Man United-bound Ruben Amorim fires Pep Guardiola warning of what’s to come in Champions League thrashing

The striker from Norway missed a penalty and squandered several more opportunities in Lisbon, but his fellow Scandinavian was unforgiving.

In his final home match with Sporting CP before leaving for England, Ruben Amorim orchestrated an amazing 4-1 victory over Manchester City, winning the hearts and minds of Manchester United supporters a week before he took over at Old Trafford.

The incredible second goal his team scored on Tuesday was a testament to Amorim’s coaching abilities, but it was also a night when Viktor Gyokeres showcased his striking ability to the world, humbling Erling Haaland in the process.

An alarm City took the lead in the third minute thanks to a robbery by Phil Foden high up the field, and the visitors had a chance to seal the victory in the first thirty minutes. Goalkeeper Franco Israel and his arch-enemy Gyokeres both stopped Haaland’s three chances after Bernardo Silva came close with a shot that went off target and cleared the Norwegian’s header off the line. Gyokeres made up for missing an early sitter by equalizing before halftime, and City suffered for their wastefulness. Gyokeres scored a penalty and Maximiliano Araújo executed a spectacular team play just as the second half began, shattering City with two incisive passes.

Sporting received a spot-kick of their own after Ousmane Diomande accidentally handballed, which was harsh to say the least. But Gyokeres had the opportunity to complete his treble after Haaland struck the bar and Sporting secured another penalty. He accepted it.

Eaten alive by Araujo on a night when City missed Walker badly.

A daunting occasion for the 19-year-old to make his full debut and so it proved. Destroyed by Gyokeres for the equaliser, though made an important tackle on the striker later.

Manuel Akanji (4/10):

Couldn’t cope with Gyokeres.

Beaten for pace by Trincao and pushed him over in frustration, giving away the first penalty.

Subs & Manager

Ilkay Gundogan (5/10):

Wasn’t the player needed at this moment.

Jeremy Doku (6/10):

Gave City a tiny bit of belief going forward.

Kevin De Bruyne (N/A):

A terrible occasion to make his comeback from injury.

Pep Guardiola (4/10):

A solid beginning, but unable to stop Sporting’s comeback. The individuals, particularly De Bruyne, made little sense, and his alterations were made too late. A poor beginning to a potentially exciting rivalry with Amorim.
