Before Saturday, Jude Bellingham hadn’t scored a goal for his club in almost six months. Finally, he did on Saturday.
The former Borussia Dortmund player scored 23 goals for Real Madrid last season, but hadn’t scored in 14 games before this weekend’s La Liga match at the Bernabeu against Osasuna.
Bellingham ended his scoring drought in style with a cheeky lobbed finish that made it look like he hadn’t lost any confidence, even though he hadn’t been scoring much lately.
A long through pass from Raul Asencio set him up, and with his first touch, he calmly lifted the ball over the goalkeeper’s head.
The goal came from something that Thierry Henry recently said Bellingham did too much of during Real Madrid games.
Henry said that Bellingham was making too many runs in behind the other team’s defense after Madrid’s 3-1 loss to AC Milan earlier in the week.
Henry, on the other hand, seemed to be criticizing Kylian Mbappe instead of Bellingham. The Arsenal great said that the English No. 10 was making those runs because his teammate wasn’t, which was not what Henry wanted.
After the game, Henry told CBS Sports, “It’s always Bellingham trying to make the run, make the team play, running in behind, trying to break the line.”
It seems like there is some anger. Your 10 is going, but your 9 isn’t. I know that it doesn’t always happen. Every single time.
“I know that Mbappe isn’t naturally a number nine and that he might not like to do this.”
“Do you think Bellingham likes to make those runs to test the team?” He’ll do it because he has to, because his will and desire tell him to.
“That’s not how you win games.” Having your 10 break the line, come back, try to bend his run, defend, and go the other side doesn’t help you win games.
Bellingham was taken off in the 74th minute of Tuesday’s loss to Milan. He got angry and kicked a bottle near the Madrid bench.
He added, “I would have been mad too.” “I saw him break a bottle.” Of course, I would be upset too.
Barcelona’s goal against Osasuna on Saturday ended a goalless streak. It came in the 42nd minute of a mixed first half for Madrid.
At halftime, Madrid was ahead 2-0, with Bellingham having helped Vinicius Junior score the first goal.
But Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti had to make two changes because central defender Eder Militao and fellow Brazilian Rodrygo got hurt and had to leave the field in tears.
Before their game on Saturday, Madrid had lost two poor games. Just 72 hours before their loss to Milan on Tuesday, they were beaten 4-0 by Barcelona in the Clasico.
Before Aurelien Tchouameni hurt his ankle against Milan, Ancelotti already had a lot of players out with injuries. David Alaba, Dani Carvajal, and Thibaut Courtois were all named as long-term absentees.
Now, the Italian will be hoping that Militao and Rodrygo’s injuries aren’t too bad, even though the way the players are reacting makes it look like they might be.
Still, Madrid easily won 4-0 on Saturday, even with those wounds.
