Argentina beat Peru 1-0 in their last game of 2024 on Tuesday at the Alberto José Armando Stadium in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Lautaro Martinez scored the game’s only goal with an assist from Lionel Messi. In the home game, the first half ended with no goals. In the 55th minute, Messi’s cross was converted by Lautaro Martinez, scoring the game-winner.
It was a beautiful goal that deserved a great help from Messi. The defenders squished Argentina’s star player at the top of the right side of the box, but Messi somehow managed to throw a pass behind Martinez, which is something he doesn’t do very often. But the striker scored the game-winning goal with great technique. He took a step back and raised his left leg, then fired the ball past the goalie and into the upper right corner.
Not long ago, Landon Donovan set the record for most international assists in men’s football history with 58. With this assist, Messi tied that record.
Messi’s Argentina win all of their WC qualifying games and come out on top.
Martinez, who plays for Inter Milan in Italy, has scored 32 goals for Argentina and is now tied for fifth place with Diego Maradona as the leader in goals scored by an Argentine player.
Also, Argentina’s last game of 2024 was against Peru. Their next game will be against foes Uruguay on March 20, 2025, four months from now. This was also Argentina’s eighth win in the South American World Cup Qualifiers. Messi’s team is currently in first place in CONMEBOL with 25 points, five more than second-placed Uruguay, who tied Brazil 1-1 on Tuesday.
They are at the bottom of the 10-team table with only seven points after 12 games.
The top six teams in the South American World Cup Qualifiers will officially go to the FIFA World Cup in this country, along with Mexico and the United States.
