In his first game as manager, Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United team tied Ipswich Town 1-1 at Portman Road on Sunday.
Man United had a lot of control and played a lot of nice passes, but they weren’t very dangerous in front of goalโtheir 11 shots were the same as the home team’s.
Even so, Amorim’s players may still need some time to get used to the way he plays, but Amad Diallo seems to have fit in perfectly.
Amad made an immediate effect on the game as the right wing-back in Amorim’s preferred 3-4-3 formation. He played a smooth one-two with Bruno Fernandes before threading a perfect through ball to Marcus Rashford up top. After Amad made a great pass, Rashford easily put the ball in the net to give United the lead in just 90 seconds.
Amad looked like he was going to help set up another goal later in the first half. Before cutting the ball back to Christian Eriksen, who was waiting on the edge of the box, he ran up the right side and lost his man. Eriksen’s shot missed the goal, which was a shame.
Amad made 44 passes, and 40 of them hit their goal. That’s a 91% success rate. He made two important passes that showed how creative he is as a wing player.
Amad hit both of his long balls, but neither of his two crosses went where it was supposed to.
Amad was able to win four of his seven ground duels, dribbling the ball twice out of five times. He also won the only flying race he did.
Amad also took two shots, but only one hit the goal. The other one was blocked.
When Amad went back to defense, he was pretty focused and made five clearances.
Many United forwards had trouble getting through the Ipswich defense, but Amad wasn’t one of them. He played deeper than he usually does, which makes this even more amazing.
With this kind of play, it’s clear that Amad fits in well with Amorim’s scheme. As the Portuguese manager tries to get things going, he will need to count on the skilled winger (or wing-back).
