Arsenal trounced Sporting CP 5-1 on Tuesday night in the Champions League, their second straight win and eighth goal.
The Gunners were just as clinical against the Lisbon powerhouses at the Estadio Jose Alvalade as they had been against Nottingham Forest 3-0 in the Premier League the weekend before.
Gabriel Martinelli gave Arsenal the lead after just seven minutes, and Kai Havertz added a second goal in the 22nd minute as Arsenal dominated Sporting.
Shortly before halftime, the Gunners took a 3-0 lead when Gabriel Magalhaes was left unmarked to head home from a Declan Rice corner.
Despite Sporting’s goal through Goncalo Inacio, Arsenal took a three-goal lead again on the 65th minute thanks to a penalty kick from Bukayo Saka.
Leandro Trossard headed into the net seven minutes from time to give the team a resounding 5-1 victory after Franco Israel had first stopped a Mikel Merino attempt.
BBC Sport reporter Leon Osman hailed Rice’s effort throughout the match, saying it was “worth the wait.”
Leon Osman says Declan Rice’s set-piece was “worth the wait” as Arsenal thrashed Sporting 3-0.
Rice’s “real pace and precision” in delivering the set-piece that led to Gabriel’s goal was commended by Osman.
Declan Rice took a while to take the set-piece, but the wait was well worth it, Osman said on BBC Radio 5 Live.
“With amazing speed and accuracy, it was whipped in, enabling Gabriel to direct the ball into the goal with its momentum.”
“That is amazing from Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal.”
Media coverage of Sporting vs. Rice DisplayThe Daily Express gave Rice a rating of seven out of ten and wrote: “Back in action after missing the Nottingham Forest win over the weekend.” Gabriel’s header goal was delivered perfectly.
Meanwhile, football.London wrote: “The night went really well,” giving it a perfect score. A constant threat in the opponent’s box.
“He had a bit of a wild finish, but it was still a good side return.”
On the evening, a number of other Arsenal players made an impression, but Gunners supporters gave Jurrien Timber special recognition for his outstanding performance.
The London Stadium will host Arsenal’s next Premier League game on Saturday night against West Ham United.
