Pep Guardiola is eager to strengthen Manchester City’s squad this January, with Newcastle United’s Bruno Guimaraes emerging as a potential target.
Guardiola is reportedly urging the City board to pursue a deal for Guimaraes, with the possibility of a swap deal being discussed. City recently ended a seven-game winless streak with a 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest, but they still need reinforcements in midfield.
Injuries, particularly to Rodri, have severely limited City’s midfield options, forcing them to rely on Ilkay Gundogan, who was signed on a free transfer, to play as a holding midfielder. Phil Foden has also struggled to find his form this season after a successful campaign last year.
Guardiola has recognized the need for a midfield addition as the January transfer window approaches. According to The Daily Mail, Guimaraes is viewed as a solution to their midfield challenges during Rodri’s absence. City is considering rekindling their interest in the Brazilian after previously exploring a move last summer.
The report indicates that Guardiola is a strong admirer of Guimaraes, and City may test Newcastle’s resolve with a transfer bid, either in early 2025 or during the summer. Last summer, discussions suggested a swap deal that would involve Matheus Nunes, who had a lackluster debut season after joining from Wolves for £53 million. Speculation had suggested he might leave before the 2024/25 season.
However, Nunes has since improved, contributing eight goals and assists in 16 appearances this season. Given City’s current injury crisis, they may be hesitant to part with him.
Regardless of whether they pursue Guimaraes or another target, the report suggests that City plans to add a midfielder when the January window opens. Although mid-season transfers are not typical for City, Guardiola has expressed a willingness to discuss options with the club’s hierarchy.
Ahead of the Forest match, Guardiola stated, “We’ll talk internally about what is best in January. It depends on our position and situation at that time.”
City will next face Crystal Palace on Saturday afternoon at Selhurst Park.
