Real Madrid lost 2-1 at Athletic Club in La Liga as Kylian Mbappe missed his second penalty in eight days. In the 68th minute, the French forward had a chance to tie the score, but Athletic’s goalie Julen Agirrezabala stopped his penalty. A week prior, this miss came after a similar destiny against Liverpool in the UEFA Champions League.
Despite the loss, Jude Bellingham of Real Madrid gave the visitors an equalizer with 12 minutes left, but Federico Valverde’s error allowed substitute Gorka Guruzeta to score a late winner.
Even if Mbappe wasn’t playing at his best, Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti supported the winger’s improvement, saying, “You have to give him time to adapt.” Mbappe’s overall performance was supported by Ancelotti, who emphasized that a player’s game shouldn’t be defined by a missed penalty.
Mbappe has scored 10 goals in 20 games for Real Madrid since joining in the summer, three of which have come from the penalty spot. He has only scored three goals in his last 11 games, though, as he has struggled recently.
After Valverde’s error resulted in Guruzeta’s winning goal, Ancelotti also supported the midfielder, stating, “Fede [Valverde] is a great player.” Like everyone else, football players make mistakes.
“I think the match was a draw,” said Ancelotti, who felt Real Madrid should have a point despite the defeat. I thought it was a draw based on what the two teams did, but I can’t argue with their victory.
