Mason Greenwood’s decisive goal in Marseille’s 2-0 triumph over St Etienne not only secured three vital points but also marked a significant milestone for the forward. The win keeps Roberto De Zerbi’s side firmly in the Ligue 1 title race, trailing leaders Paris Saint-Germain by just five points.
Signed from Manchester United for £30 million during the summer transfer window, Greenwood’s arrival at Marseille was met with mixed reactions, including the divisive #GreenwoodNotWelcome campaign. However, the English forward has silenced critics with his on-field performances, continuing the form that earned him Getafe’s Player of the Season award during his loan spell last year.
Against St Etienne, Greenwood netted his 10th Ligue 1 goal of the season, reaching double digits in a league campaign for the first time since his 2019-20 breakout season at Manchester United. Impressively, Greenwood became the first player since Sonny Anderson in 1994 to score his first 10 Ligue 1 goals in just 14 matches, a feat that also places him joint-second in the league’s scoring charts alongside PSG’s Bradley Barcola.
This achievement further underscores his resurgence after a challenging period. Arrested in January 2022 and later charged with attempted rape, assault, and controlling behavior, Greenwood saw all charges dropped in February 2023 due to withdrawn witness statements. He has maintained his innocence throughout.
Greenwood’s contributions, coupled with those of fellow summer signing Adrien Rabiot—who also scored against St Etienne—underline De Zerbi’s ability to integrate new talent effectively. Earlier this month, Greenwood secured a dramatic stoppage-time penalty in a 2-1 victory over Monaco, another key moment in Marseille’s pursuit of PSG.
While Greenwood thrives in France, his former club Manchester United continues to struggle for consistent firepower despite new leadership under Ruben Amorim. Alejandro Garnacho leads their scoring charts with eight goals across all competitions, while Marcus Rashford has managed only four in the Premier League.
Marseille now sit level with Monaco on 29 points, and with Greenwood in top form, De Zerbi’s side looks poised to maintain pressure on PSG as the season progresses.
