Mikel Arteta suggested that Myles Lewis-Skelly could secure the vacant left-back position after a standout performance against Monaco on Wednesday night.
The 18-year-old became Arsenal’s youngest starter in the Champions League since Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in 2011, impressing in his rare appearance.
With injuries affecting the defense, especially at full-back, Lewis-Skelly may now get more playing time.
Arteta remarked, “It’s a proud moment. He’s one of our own, and it’s a joy to watch him. It’s a privilege to give someone the opportunity to start changing their career.”
“He certainly seized the moment. It’s great to see we can rely on him in this environment and at this level. I was very pleased with his performance.”
When asked if Lewis-Skelly could claim the left-back spot, he responded, “He has a chance. He’s been in contention. During pre-season, he showed us he’s ready, just like Ethan (Nwaneri).”
“They feel at ease in this environment and can compete, which is crucial at this level. Today he demonstrated he’s at that level.”
Bukayo Saka also excelled, scoring twice and assisting another goal to lead the French side. He now has nine goals and 12 assists in 21 matches this season.
“What he’s achieved at his age can be compared to world-class players,” Arteta said. “His first six years of professional football have been exceptional.”
“His goal is to keep improving. He has the right players and environment to continue doing so, and I’m confident he will.”
