Pep Guardiola expressed serious doubts about his ability to turn around Manchester City’s troubling form after suffering an astonishing eighth defeat in 11 games. Following a calamitous loss to Manchester United, where City conceded two goals in just 116 seconds during the second half, Guardiola took full responsibility for the team’s struggles.
In his post-match comments, he stated, “I’m the boss, I’m the manager and I’m not good enough. It’s as simple as that. I don’t have a defense.” He acknowledged the emotional turmoil affecting the team, saying, “We’re more anxious with and without the ball. The worst thing is not to have composure and calm. What does it give you? Momentum and confidence.”
City has managed to win only once in their last 11 matches across all competitions, which included a solitary victory against Nottingham Forest. Guardiola lamented the team’s lack of fluidity in their play, saying, “We are not nice in the way we played… We give away many things.”
He further emphasized the need for results to lift the team’s spirits, admitting, “It’s getting worse and worse. I have to find a solution. So far, I didn’t find it and this is the truth.”
City midfielder Bernardo Silva echoed Guardiola’s sentiments but was more critical, likening the team’s decision-making to that of inexperienced players. He highlighted a particularly poor moment in the match: “Minute 87 in a derby, winning 1-0 and our corner ends in a penalty for them. If we make these stupid decisions… you deserve to pay for that.”
Silva insisted that the team needs to raise its standards, stating, “We have to do better individually and collectively because it’s not the standards of Manchester City.”
As City struggles to regain its form, both Guardiola and his players are aware that significant changes are needed to return to winning ways.
