Marcus Rashford has admitted he is “ready for a new challenge” after being left out of the squad for Manchester United’s victory over Manchester City.
The 27-year-old forward, who was expected to have a fresh start under new manager Ruben Amorim following Erik ten Hag’s departure, has struggled to convince the Portuguese coach of his importance to the team.
Rashford, along with teammate Alejandro Garnacho, was omitted from the Manchester derby squad, fueling speculation that he could be sold by the Red Devils.
Speaking to journalist Henry Winter, Rashford said: “For me, personally, I think I’m ready for a new challenge and the next steps.”
The forward was quick to emphasize that his eventual departure would not come with any resentment towards the club. He added: “When I leave, it’s going to be ‘no hard feelings.’ You’re not going to have any negative comments from me about Manchester United. That’s me as a person.”
“If I know that a situation is already bad I’m not going to make it worse.
“I’ve seen how other players have left in the past and I don’t want to be that person.
Marcus Rashford has acknowledged the challenges he’s facing at Manchester United, admitting “When I leave, I’ll make a statement, and it will be from me.”
The forward had previously been linked with Paris Saint-Germain when his contract was set to expire in 2023, but he ultimately chose to extend his stay at Old Trafford last year.
Reacting to his omission from the squad for Manchester United’s derby victory over Manchester City, Rashford said: “It’s disheartening to be left out of a derby, but it’s happened, we won the game so let’s move on. It’s disappointing, but as I’ve got older, I can deal with setbacks. What am I going to do about it? Sit there and cry about it, or do my best the next time I’m available?”
New United boss Ruben Amorim denied that dropping Rashford was about “sending a message” but emphasized the detailed evaluations behind his squad selections. Amorim explained: “We try to evaluate everything—training, performances, engagement with teammates, pushing teammates forward. I pay attention to everything: the way you eat, the way you put your clothes on for a game. Everything. I make my evaluation and then I decide.”
Rashford also faced a challenge from teammate Diogo Dalot, who warned that players must “suffer” if they want to succeed at Manchester United.
Club legend Roy Keane weighed in on the situation, suggesting a move away from Old Trafford could benefit Rashford. Speaking to Sky Sports, Keane said: “We need to see how they react to this big disappointment of being left out of the squad in a big game—a big call from the manager. He’s putting a marker down to these players.”
“I feel probably a move for Marcus definitely would suit the player.
“He’s been at the club a long time, a new challenge (would be good).”
Roy Keane believes leaving Manchester United could be good for Rashford.
