Harry Maguire squandered a golden opportunity that could have secured a dramatic victory for Manchester United against their fierce rivals, Liverpool.
The Red Devils managed to hold the Premier League leaders to a 2-2 draw with a determined performance at Anfield.
Lisandro Martinez set the tone early in the second half with a stunning strike to open the scoring, but Liverpool quickly equalized.
Cody Gakpo found the net shortly after, and Mohamed Salah converted a penalty to give the hosts the lead following a handball by Matthijs de Ligt.
Amad Diallo later leveled the score, but Ruben Amorim’s side felt they deserved more from the match.
In the dying moments, Joshua Zirkzee set up Maguire, who unfortunately sent the shot over the bar from close range.
Sky Sports pundits Roy Keane and Daniel Sturridge debated whether Maguire should have converted, given that Zirkzee’s pass took a slight bobble.
Sturridge remarked, “Don’t bobble it into him; he had all the time in the world.”
Keane countered, “Know your players and expect the bobble. He’s not going to deliver a perfect ball. You’ve got to hit the target, Harry. If it hits the target, there’s no problem.”
Sturridge replied, “He passed it as if he were cutting it back to shoot. We’re talking about an international player here.”
Despite the miss, United manager Amorim commended Maguire’s effort.
“For me, missing chances or playing poorly with the ball isn’t the main concern,” he told the BBC. “The most important thing is that Harry gave everything on the pitch.”
