‘Now or Never’: 88% pass accuracy in clash vs Liverpool – Paul Scholes urges Man Utd keeping £42m Man Utd Star at any cost

Paul Scholes has stated that Manchester United midfielder Manuel Ugarte is becoming an “untouchable” under Ruben Amorim, following their 2-2 draw with Liverpool on Sunday.

The former Red Devils star praised the Uruguayan international for his standout performance at Anfield, where United managed to secure a surprising draw against the Premier League leaders, breaking their three-game losing streak.

Ugarte, who partnered with Kobbie Mainoo in midfield, was crucial in United’s pressing and transitions, achieving an impressive 88% pass accuracy, along with four tackles and two clearances.

After the match, Scholes expressed his admiration for Ugarte, noting that he was pleasantly surprised by the player’s growth in confidence since his early days at Old Trafford:

“It has to be [Ugarte untouchable]. Mainoo is the best option alongside him when fit. Ugarte is quality on the ball; he’s surprised me a bit and has performed better than I expected based on what I saw at PSG.

“He’s really grown in confidence, contributing defensively and offensively with composure. At this point, the United midfield should consist of him and another player.”

Ugarte seems to be finding his footing at United after his £42 million summer transfer from Paris Saint-Germain, having initially struggled to showcase his best form under Erik ten Hag.

Now 23, he is becoming a key figure for United under Amorim, with whom he previously collaborated at Sporting Lisbon, winning the Portuguese League Cup in the 2021/22 season.

The Uruguayan has started six of United’s last seven Premier League matches, missing only the recent 2-0 defeat to Newcastle due to suspension.

Currently sitting 14th in the league table after 20 games, Manchester United will next face Arsenal in the FA Cup third round before taking on Southampton in the Premier League next week.

The Red Devils are preparing for a busy January transfer window, with multiple players, including Marcus Rashford and Antony, reportedly up for sale.
