Kevin De Bruyne is reportedly on the verge of joining MLS newcomers San Diego, a club that has yet to play a match. The 33-year-old Manchester City midfielder, a six-time Premier League champion, is said to be “closer than ever” to making the move, with sources indicating that he is unconcerned if City opts not to extend his contract, which expires this summer.
De Bruyne is reportedly leaning toward a lucrative opportunity in the United States rather than considering a move to the Saudi Pro League. This comes despite his recent resurgence in form, having regained his starting position with City and contributing an assist in their 4-1 victory over West Ham last Saturday.
Although he has expressed skepticism about moving outside Europe in the past, De Bruyne acknowledged the need to be open to new opportunities at his age. Last summer, he remarked, “at my age, you have to be open to everything,” and hinted at the financial incentives of playing in leagues like Saudi Arabia.
According to The Athletic, De Bruyne and San Diego have been in discussions for months, with a deal now appearing imminent. San Diego will compete in the Western Conference of MLS, with their inaugural match set against reigning champions LA Galaxy on February 23, followed by their first home game against St. Louis City on March 1 at Snapdragon Stadium.
